Check out this progression from one of my customers from 2021. This was just about an entire yard project but you can see a few patches of of existing turf. I believe this yard was sprayed for weeds prior to the plugging project. His began plugging in June 2021. Pic#2 is about 3 weeks after plugging Pics #4 and 5 were at 8 weeks after plugging. Here's what the customer said, "How's that for time travel? 8 weeks and the bare area is lush!".

Some of you in the deep south are already in the window to apply your pre-emergent, the rest of us are on the cusp or are just outside the window. Get your Pre-emergent herbicide down when your 5 day soil temp average is about 50 degrees and climbing. Weed seed begins to germinate around the 55 degree mark. How a pre-emergent works: Once applied and it has been watered in (rain or irrigation), the herbicide forms a "barrier" that will prune off new root growth from newly sprouted seedlings.
